Senior Girls AFL Champions

On Monday 7 June, the junior, and senior AFL girls travelled down to Fisherman’s Road, Maroochydore, where they competed against fierce competition in the AFL Queensland Schools Cup. Despite there being many girls who had never played a game of footy, under the expert coaching of Ms Ruthven and Mr O’Shaughnessy, everyone played well throughout the entire day. Both teams commenced the day with infectious enthusiasm and competitiveness, which persisted as they both dominated in their pool matches.

The junior girls were a force to be reckoned with for the entirety of the competition and won many of their challenging contests. As a result, they competed in the semi-finals. However, only just missed playing in the grand final, going down in a hard-fought match against Matthew Flinders.

The senior girls, much like the juniors, showed great promise in all of their games and were seen as a considerable threat to the opposing schools. The girls stood as a united front all day, playing hard and achieving consistent wins which resulted in them gaining a place in the grand final. The grand final was played against Sunshine Beach State High. The game was a nail-biter; however, the STCC girls came home with the hard-earned win, undefeated all day. They will now progress to the Metro-North Wide Bay Regional Finals.

Congratulations to all the girls who contributed to the day’s successes. We wish the senior girl’s luck in the next stage and hope to see the junior girls back next year for some more footy!!
