We would like to send our thanks and prayers to a treasured member of our Noosa Catholic community, Mrs Helen Thompson. Helen and her late husband John had a magnificent global career in the arts as jazz artists and music entertainers. Meeting John Thompson in The Sydney Jazz Club in the late 50’s, they became inseparable, were married and set off for a lifelong Jazz career in the USA in New York and then New Orleans, with Helen as vocalist-pianist and John as a drummer. A decade ago they returned to Australia and even up until a few weeks ago, well into her 70’s, Helen’s passion for Jazz and accumulated knowledge continued to drive her to run an online Jazz site and network with daily posts of limited edition soundtracks, from her retirement home in Noosa. Now in her final days in Eden Rehabilitation Centre (Cooroy), Helen has generously donated her beautiful and well-travelled piano and lifelong collection of Jazz recordings and texts for use by our Music students. Last week we had a plaque made for the newly arrived piano and I took photos of the plaque and of our students playing the piano to her in Eden - her eyes filled with tears; she sends her love to all who might enjoy her gift and delight in the world of Jazz and asked that when she’s gone that I kiss our beloved Sydney Harbour Bridge for her in her absence. Please keep Helen in your prayers.
